Consortium for ICH Pedia, Bangladesh

Cultural heritage is the legacy of physical artefacts and intangible attributes of a group or society that are inherited from past generations, maintained in the present and bestowed for the benefit of future generations. Safeguarding intangible heritage is the protection of cultural identities and therefore the cultural diversity of humankind. Intangible Heritage includes, but is not limited to, traditional festivals, oral traditions, oral epics, customs, ways of life, traditional crafts, etc. It has become one of the priorities of UNESCO in the cultural domain.

At Shadhona, we believe that performance and cultural practices are individual and communal acts that aim to transcend everyday limits of consciousness. Furthermore, their enactment and the processes behind their execution are both capable of transforming the world we live in. Established in 1992, though Shadhona’s scope of work encompasses many genres of art and the target group is diverse, the defining character of our organization is the hard-core, intensive work that we do with the Arts and Artistes, in the areas of a) research, documentation, b) training c) production & presentation, and d) safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage. Our work encompasses both urban and indigenous arts and cultural practices. Additionally, Shadhona is a UNESCO ICH Committee accredited NGO.

Bhabanagara Foundation, from its inception, has been ceaselessly active in studying and practicing diverse elements of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Bangladesh. Bhabanagara Foundation follows the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage 2003 for our planning, implementation and management of our activities to bring around and protect Bangladesh ICH. Inspired with the initiative of Bhabanagara, the traditional Baul-fakirs of Bangladesh are now in practice of the most ancient Bengali ICH Charyapada songs in the Bengali folk tunes, which is a remarkable milestone of revival of almost extinct Bengal ICH. Since last eight years, on every Wednesday afternoon, Bhabanagara has been facilitating Sadhusanga circle for demonstrating ICH performances and respective intellectual discourses. The national and international scholars, academicians and practitioners attend the Sadhusanga held at the open venue of Suhrawardi Uddyan (to the opposite of Bangla Academy Main Gate). The organization has a sister wing named Bhabanagara Sadhusanga Charya Charca Kendra at Paharpur, Naogaon, by the world heritage of Buddhist Vihara at Paharpur. More than hundred Baul Sadhakas have come under the umbrella of this Charya Charca Kendra for internalizing, practicing and performances of Charya songs. This is to mention that, with support of the Department of Archeology of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, we organized a wider Field Work of the National Workshop on Implementation of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the ICH in Bangladesh during 17-20 July 2013. The pictorial findings on the work was incorporated in the Final Report to UNESCO. In the context of COVID-19, Bhabanagara Foundation developed an elaborate List of the Folk artists and performers from all over Bangladesh. Bhabanagara Foundation also publishes Bhabanagara, an international journal of Bengal Studies, is a peer-reviewed journal published two times of a year by the Bhabanagara Foundation. The journal publishes fresh articles in the field of Bengal or Bangla Studies, as broadly defined. Bhabanagara is an open access online journal. The journal unveils the diversity of Bangla language, culture and literature to the rest of the world. Bhabanagara is documenting the Intangible Cultural Heritage and Folklores of Bangladesh by its fieldwork-based research, and is ready to bring them in front of the world's community. Bhabanagara also works in documentation of dance, drama, songs, rituals, traditions and craft like needle-work, paintings, clay-craft, metal-craft, etc.

BASECAMP established Bangladesh's first campground along with tree and on-ground activities where city dwellers, both individuals and institutions, experience outdoor living, adventure and curriculum learning. We have already engaged with two communities to build experiences around it. This sustainable business model identifies, empowers and packages unique features of that community, and makes the experience memorable for local and international tourists. Starting from one location near Dhaka, we have already expanded to two community tourism destinations for local and in-bound tourists in Tangail and Bandarbans under the initiative Thousand Miles Expeditions. In 2013, we built country's first camp ground that allowed city dwellers to experience outdoor living and adventure activities. Working with them made us passionate in creating meaningful experiences of life that creates a deeper connection with the self, community, culture and the nature. Munlai Para is one of the cultural capitals of Bandarban hill district of CHT. With the aim of restoring, developing and sustaining the unique features (natural and cultural) of Munlai and package them into a community tourism product with responsible tourism activities and business incubation, the Bandarban Hill District Council (BHDC) of Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tract Affairs (MoCHTA), Base Camp Bangladesh Ltd. and community members of Munlai Para designed the Munlai Community Tourism project. BHDC and Base Camp have a strong foothold in the Munlai Para, that created a competitive ground upon which this ambitious and bold community-based tourism development project is built.
