Area: Area: 20,523.27 sq km, located in between 23°58' and 25°12' north latitudes and in between 90°56' and 92°30' east longitudes. Dhaka Division is bounded by Mymensingh Division to the north, Barisal Division to the south, Chittagong Division to the east and south-east, Sylhet Division to the north-east, Rangpur Division to the north-west, and Rajshahi Division to the west and Khulna Divisions to the south-west.

  • Khulna was part of the ancient kingdoms of Vanga or Samatata. It became part of the Sena dynasty during the 12th-century reign of Ballala Sena, and formed part of the Bagri division of Bengal. The region's previous name was Jalalabad.

  • During the 14th century, Shamsuddin Firoz Shah was the first Muslim ruler to arrive in the city; Muslim settlements increased during the time of Shamsuddin Ilyas Shah, and many mosques and shrines were established.

  • Vikramaditya (one of Karrani's chief ministers) obtained a grant in southern Bengal— including Khulna—when Karrani was fighting the Mughals. Vikramaditya established a sovereign kingdom with its capital at Iswaripur (currently in Jessore District). He was succeeded by his son, Pratapaditya, who gained preeminence over the Baro- Bhuyans and controlled southern Bengal

  • Khulna remained under the rule of autonomous nawabs (rulers) of Bengal until 1793, when the British East India Company abolished nizamat (local rule) and took control of the city. The city became part of Jessore District in 1842, and became the headquarters of Khulna District

  • Before 19 August 1947, Khulna district was a part of undivided Bengal.

  • Khulna Division was formed in 1960.

  • Khulna Paurasabha was declared on 12 December 1884. It was up graded into a Municipal Corporation on 12 December 1984;

  • Khulna City Corporation was declared on 6 August 1990.
