Rangpur Division

Area: Area 16320.26 sq km, located in between 25°20' and 26°37' north latitudes and in between 88°50' and 89°53' east longitudes. Rangpur division consists of eight districts. There are 58 Upazilas or subdistricts under these eight districts. Rangpur is the northernmost division of Bangladesh and has a population of 15,665,000 in the 2011 Census.

Rivers: Brahmaputra, Jamuna, Punarbhaba, Karatoya, Atrai, Tista, Mahananda. The biggest irrigation project of the country, Tista Barrage Project (length 615 m) is located at Doani of Hatibandha upazila.

  • Rangpur has come in the continuity of Pragjyotish, Kamrup, Kamatarajya and Manthanakot. This information is present in the map of the Middle Agesd. A historical river called Rangpu, Distang, Teesta etc. and the villages inhabited by the vast banks of that river are the first to indicate the geo-socio-cultural history of Rangpu and later Rangpur.

  • 1575

    Mansingh, commander of Emperor Akbar, conquered part of Rangpur in 1575. Rangpur came completely under the Mughal empire in 1686.

    Rangpur Division was formed on 25 January 2010. Rangpur division was declared comprising of 8 districts and 58 upazilas of Rajshahi Division.
